JOINT LIONS 4-C4 AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECTS

Lions District 4-C4 regularly partners with Habitat for Humanity to help develop housing for families with disadvantaged members, especially those who are visually handicapped or suffer from one of disabilities targeted by Lions International. In some cases, we are the major partner, responsible for generating the funds and labor necessary to match Habitat for Humanity funding. In other cases, we are simply one of several civic minded organizations contributing the match. From time to time, we also obtain funds from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).

If YOU would like to help us create housing for the handicapped - housing that they own and maintain - please contact our project co-ordinator, Lion Jim Bigelow. You don't have to be a Lion - just a concerned individual willing to give of your time and abilities. If you want to make a financial contribution, please send your check, made payable to "Peninsula Habitat" and mail it to Jim Bigelow, District 4-C4 Habitat Chair, 1605 Vine Street, Belmont, CA 94002-3743.

In the late summer of 2007, Peninsula Habitat for Humanity will begin building a community of eight town homes on Lincoln Avenue in Redwood City. This new project will include seven three-bedroom units and one two-bedroom, wheelchair-accessible unit, all with two-car garages. Each home will be built using "green" building principles and will integrate solar electric panels into the roof to generate renewable electric energy.

Peninsula Habitat, Redwood City and the Redwood City Redevelopment Agency have partnered since the late 1990's and together, we are working to build affordable ownership housing. The City and its Redevelopment Agency have provided a land grant which has made it possible for Peninsula Habitat to build the eight affordable town homes on Lincoln Avenue. Upon completion of this project in late 2008, Peninsula Habitat will have built a total 51 affordable ownership homes in Redwood City alone!

Future homeowners are being selected from families who reside in Redwood City, meet the HUD definition of earning a very low income, have good credit, can make mortgage payments for 30+ years, and are willing to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to help build their new community.

In 18 years, Peninsula Habitat has worked with more than 40,000 volunteers and community donors to empower 95 families to become homeowners on the Peninsula. Currently, eleven homes in Brisbane and South San Francisco are under construction, one of which marks the 100th home built by Peninsula Habitat for Humanity!

ROLISON ROAD TOWNHOME FOR THE SIGHT IMPAIRED

After two years of plannng and hard work, the Ortez Family moved in on May 30 and June 1st and are now living in the "sight impaired" townhome sponsored by Lions District 4-C4, Lions International LCIF Grant funding and Seaport Industrial Association our generous funding partner from the community.

At the District level we are still completing the final disbursements from the $40,000 Lions International Grant and expect the project to be totally completed by the end of July when we have completed the remaining 65 hours of volunteer time we still need to contribute to Habitat for Humanity.

The Foster City Lions Club has donated the most volunteer labor hours followed by Menlo Park Host Lions Club. The Peninsula Habitat project at Rolison Road will have a total of 36 new townhomes when the final building is completed in about 8 months. Two units have special needs for handicapped of which the Lions sponsored townhome is one.
